Cheshire homes and their roof windows

Cheshire’s housing ranges from period cottages and Victorian and Edwardian villas to barn conversions, 1980s and 1990s estates and new-build developments, and many have loft conversions. That mix shows up in the roof windows we are asked to look at:

• Ageing timber windows from the 1980s and 1990s that have become draughty, stiff or hard to keep clean, often in high positions that are difficult to reach.
• Misted or cracked glazing where the sealed unit has failed but the frame is still sound – often fixed with glass replacement rather than a whole new window.
• Leaks around the flashing on tiled and slate roofs, where the flashing kit needs replacing or was not fitted correctly in the first place.
• Other manufacturers’ windows that owners want to replace with VELUX – which is not always a straight frame-for-frame swap, as our Knutsford job shows.
• Listed buildings and conservation areas, where the type and finish of roof window matter. Check with your local planning authority before changing roof windows on a listed building or in a conservation area; we can advise on suitable VELUX products.

Case study: FAKRO to VELUX replacement in Knutsford

At a house in Knutsford, our fitters Stuart, Steven and Adam replaced two wooden FAKRO roof windows with white polyurethane VELUX GGU CK02 windows, EDW flashing kits for the profiled tiled roof, KSX 100K solar upgrade kits and VELUX DSL solar blackout blinds.

The windows sat high above the living area, so the team worked from an internal scaffold tower. The old frames had been screwed through the plasterboard reveals, so they were dismantled carefully to protect the finish, and neat white PVC trim closed the gaps the previous installers had left – with no extra plastering or decorating for the homeowners.
